Design Detail: Fondazione Prada

Reminiscing on 2021 design trips, and my short solo trip to #Milan in November #italy

I could have posted any angle of the awesome @fondazioneprada , the former distillery in south Milan which has been masterfully converted into an experimental, installation art destination, designed by @oma.eu , led by Rem Koolhaa.

The huge compound is a ground-breaking artistic statement, every aspect is as surprising as it is interesting, indeed in many parts, large expanses are clad in gold leaf.

I choose to post a photo of the monochrome interior of the female WCs!! I loved the symmetry, the sheen, and the simplicity. I find the much-considered design details required to achieve this loud architectural look fascinating. The scheme is so bold yet feels soft, it is modern, functional and captivating.

It is in complete contrast to the room which these toilets serviced; the #wesanderson designed #barluce , with his typical influence in the interior details, pastel colours and stylised finishes – from the veneered wooden paneling that lines the walls, to the colourfully upholstered Formica furniture, to the Steve Zissou pinball and terrazzo floors.

The half day visit was inspiring, every corner turned was a new experience on the senses and the mind. I missed the industrial designed cinema though, apparently worth a visit and a good a reason as any to return!
